Clovers
Clovers are valued in pastures for their high feed value and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. White clover is very widely used in most farm systems. In some systems red clover is sown for its summer yield or annual clovers for their earlier spring growth.

Chicory
Chicory is a tap-rooted, drought tolerant herb. Chicory gives excellent animal performance, and has good summer but little winter growth. It is mainly sown as a 6-8 month summer crop, or sown as part of a pasture mix where it may last 2-3 years.

Plantain
Is a short-lived, deep-rooted herb, which can be sown as a crop, an 18 month finishing pasture, or in a pasture mix. An animal diet of 30% plantain can reduce nitrogen leaching over diploid perennial ryegrass, however how this is practically achieved on most farms is unclear.
